When at a beach, I have a tendency not to sit in my beach chair. A sandy expanse calls for running or long walks in search of sea treasures. Waves beg to be kayaked or body surfed. Placid clear waters invite snorkeling, windsurfing and swimming. I make excuses to those laying out their towels explaining that I just need to stretch my legs, and that it’s too hot to sit.
But the truth is I just like interacting with a sand/sea environment and rarely advance a page in whatever book has traveled along in my beach bag…
Crystal Cove State Park Map and Visitor Information
Crystal Cove State Park requires no such excuses. With craggy rocks and plentiful tide pools, almost all who visit venture into exploring mode. As low tide approaches, each departing wave leaves behind life and its curious remains.
Crabs, chitons, sea stars, anemones, urchins and algae waft in and out on waves that rearrange their worlds with swells and surges. Critters scurry from sudden exposure. Stiff bits of seaweed billow with momentary hydration. It’s a glimpse of the hidden world I love to slide through with mask and snorkel.
Besides its 3 mile beach spread and underwater park, Crystal Cove State Park contains mountain bike trails and 17 trail miles for hiking. Its historic district, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a community of 46 1930′s era cottages available for rental plus the Beachcomber Cafe and the Crystal Cove Shake Shack.
It’s both a wander and a wonder and a great way to spend an afternoon in southern California.

That would a wonderful place to visit, thanks for sharing…have a good one…
Interaction with the sandy beach, critters, craggy rocks,… wow, what a wonderful way to spend time.
That’s an inspiring beach adventure. I’m afraid I’m one of those that like to loll on the sand and occasionally explore for creatures and shells.
mee mOe: There is something fundamentally good about the whole tide pool experience. Most of us explore them as kids; a few of us continue the delving into adulthood (it helps to have kids around!). I love that you never know exactly what you will find!
Rainfield: I agree. Stresses kind of melt away with the rhythm of the tide…
Fly Girl: Not a bad thing… Some day I’ll learn to do a little more of the “lolling”!
Hi Heather,
Being an archipelago, my country is surrounded by water, yet I seldom see a beach. The last time I went to see one was about five years ago, I think. You are so lucky!
Oh Rino! I hope you manage a trip back to the beach soon. I know you keep so busy with your family and work, but there is something so soothing about the water.
You are an extremely active person!
