When at a beach, I have a tendency not to sit in my beach chair. A sandy expanse calls for running or long walks in search of sea treasures. Waves beg to be kayaked or body surfed. Placid clear waters invite snorkeling, windsurfing and swimming. I make excuses to those laying out their towels explaining that I just need to stretch my legs, and that it’s too hot to sit.
But the truth is I just like interacting with a sand/sea environment and rarely advance a page in whatever book has traveled along in my beach bag…
Crystal Cove State Park Map and Visitor Information
Crystal Cove State Park requires no such excuses. With craggy rocks and plentiful tide pools, almost all who visit venture into exploring mode. As low tide approaches, each departing wave leaves behind life and its curious remains.
Crabs, chitons, sea stars, anemones, urchins and algae waft in and out on waves that rearrange their worlds with swells and surges. Critters scurry from sudden exposure. Stiff bits of seaweed billow with momentary hydration. It’s a glimpse of the hidden world I love to slide through with mask and snorkel.
Besides its 3 mile beach spread and underwater park, Crystal Cove State Park contains mountain bike trails and 17 trail miles for hiking. Its historic district, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a community of 46 1930′s era cottages available for rental plus the Beachcomber Cafe and the Crystal Cove Shake Shack.
It’s both a wander and a wonder and a great way to spend an afternoon in southern California.
