One of the Guys: The step from two to three children pretty much assures many years of flexible living, doesn't it? I can't imagine how my mother and dad managed four of us!

Donald: They do. I'm always happy for the new conversations and activities that can be shared with an older child but also keenly aware that my job is to help them to need me less and less. Bittersweet in every way.

Rainfield: Every day I see those wings grow a little bit stronger. My daughter has been blessed with a lot of great possibilities for her life.

Suzanne: Middle children at least seem well able to explain the unique difficulties of their position. I've always thought that being an oldest child was the hardest, but I sense that each position presents enough challenges to grow strengths worth carrying forward into adult life.

Fly Girl: When my kids made the inevitable toddler messes, I used to tell them, "it's a good thing you're so cute." I think we moms need something similar for the teen years sometimes! Teens present unique challenges and unique joys.

Very sweet piece Heather. You really captured Hannah well.

We have three ourselves and it is very much how you describe it. If it's not one, it's the other!

Happy Birthday!

Ahh...the teen years!!!

Oh what a timely post. I just grounded my 13-year-old daughter for being disrespectful two days ago. This helps me remember why I had her in the first place. Hannah sounds like such a joy.

I too am a middle child but sandwiched between sisters. I recognize many of those qualities in myself - especially creative, organized, taken for granted. I sympathize with her over the last. It has continued all my life. She sounds like a gem and I hope too that she never loses that sparkle in her eye.

She was once shy, but will later grow up big enough to fly, like a bird, in the wild.
