Tucked amidst the solemn and the historic of downtown Boston in Boston Public Garden is a sculpture honoring a classic children’s picture book. Created by Nancy Schon, “Make Room for Ducklings” commemorates Robert McCloskey’s book of the same title. The whimsical piece features Mrs. Mallard and her brood of fledglings en route to their chosen home on a lagoon island in Boston Public Garden.
McCloskey’s book is the official children’s book of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the sculpture is a charming contrast to the taller skyscrapers and monuments that epitomize downtown Boston.
Downtown hotels within walking distance of Boston Public Garden and the “Make Room for Ducklings” sculpture include the Four Seasons Boston, The Ritz-Carlton Boston Common and Fifteen Beacon.

Adorable. Kids must love it!
Love that book! We’ve been to Boston many times and the Public Garden is one of the highlights.
Those ducks are so cute.
How cute! I’ve always liked duck stories but I never read this one as a child.
Such an interesting feature.
NothingProfound: Kids love it, and their parents love to see them loving it.
One of The Guys: There’s something very sweet about items from your childhood becoming memories for your own children.
Suzanne: Aren’t they? They are best viewed at “kid level”.
Fly Girl: I can’t believe you made it through kindergarten without this one!
Graham: The integration of public art definitely adds to the appeal of Boston Public Garden.
