Travel creates its own unique thrills and tensions. Slipping my shoes back on and strolling away from the TSA crew at an American airport is always a good feeling, no matter how pleasant the screener. And I’m usually aware of that first exhale once I am seated, buckled and reaching for reading material. The tension of achieving that moment of departure swings out of mind once the counterweight-ing thrill of prospective adventures sink in. It’s more than a fair trade.
Similarly, once we were underway from Fajardo to Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico there was that joyful sense of nothing to do but enjoy the people, the views and catch a few of each with my camera.
We wandered the boat, roasted in the sun and relished the motion as we (finally!) made our way through the ocean waters.
Gigi and Faizah who were so helpful to us in navigating the tedious ticketing process sat nearby. We would run into them repeatedly on the small island of Vieques. And once we were home I had to check out Gigi’s drumming website. An accomplished musician and voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys), her music is a “daring… deviant” fusion of her Puerto Rican roots and the LA music scene.

Ah! I can taste that salt water from here. Happy New Year!
NothingProfound: Thanks! Wishing you a wonderful 2011 and hoping that there’s a little salt water ahead for both of us!
The water looks alike, but our feeling is different.
Nice traveling, and Happy New Year to you and your family.
