River of Clouds

The swift mass of cloud took us by surprise as we drove from Marbella to Ronda, Spain along A397. High in the Sierra de las Nievas, the sudden swirl of white prompted us to park at the side of the road and grab cameras.

We weren’t the first to arrive upon the enchanting scene, however. One of my sweetest memories from our trip to Spain is the white-haired couple we spied enjoying breakfast as they luxuriated in their lawn chairs watching the fog roll by.

The flight path of the clouds was obviously anticipated and well known to them. Cheap, yet priceless entertainment. And as the shroud of ivory poured through like a silent river engulfing all the mountains below, they watched as quiet companions, sipping orange juice beneath a Spanish fir.

  1. Hi Heather,
I lived in Spain for three years in the 1980′s and I missed going to Andalusia. It is one of those things that I regret not having done when I was there!

  2. So good to hear from you, Rino! Ronda kind of fell into our trip itinerary along the way. I was really glad we found it as it was one of the highlights! Where in Spain did you live?

  3. Looks like a magnificent place to visit. Hope you had a wonderful time.

  4. It was truly magical to wander into that moment. Nothing random about an experience like that, I think! And yes, it was wonderful. Haven’t been in the Smokies for some time, but I remember some terrific hiking down your way ; )
