Winter can be a rough ride for an outdoor lover who goes numb in freezing temperatures! Whispers of warmer seasons past and yet-to-be can help less enthusiastic winter dwellers weather the temporary chill and appreciate the architecture of a bared woods. This photo, taken last winter on a seasonally-vacated mountain bike trail, is an encouragement to bundle up and search out the beauty in a frozen afternoon.

I did my first snowy trail run at yesterday and have officially plunged into yet another Ohio winter. Sensation has returned to my toes; acclimation is complete.

Summer Stored in Franklin Park Conservatory

An In-Town Tourist Feature:
…because Adventure begins in the heart and Travel starts at the end of your own driveway.

Ohio winters challenge the hiking, biking, beach girl in me. Bundling up for a hike or layering for a run in the woods isn’t too bad most of the time, but the lingering listless gray can creep into a body even when the chill has been held at bay.

I have to attack the winter months a little. Find ways to ride over them like a beach ball on a wave. The gym works. Warm weather getaways work even better! But one of our better options locally is Franklin Park Conservatory. I can always find a bit of summer inside that stately structure and, for a few minutes, completely forget the wind chill waiting in the parking lot.

The Conservatory is a Christmastime tradition with festive poinsettias, a model train display and whimsical gingerbread houses. The seasonal attractions, including a phenomenal juggling act are always top notch. But for me, the best part is always wandering into greened spaces and spying summer blooms.

Winter Wildlights

As evening exercise it beats running mindless laps at the gym or stumbling along a dimly lit running trail.  But a walk through Ohio’s most spectacular light display offers much more than a Christmas cookie calorie burn!

Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo has become an annual Christmas tradition for many of us in central Ohio.  It’s a jeweled version of an Ohio winter with acres of glittering trees and walkways rainbowed by glowing lights.  Musical light shows and live music, reindeer, a scuba Santa diving amongst tropical fish in a coral reef (as well as a dry one, available for souvenir photos), a 1914 carousel, a Christmas train ride…  Wildlights is geared to engage the whole family.

And actually, it can simply be a great evening stroll. Even on a crowded night, it beats tangling with frantic shoppers at the mall.

Wildlights runs through Jan 1, 2012 at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio.  Admission is $14.00. Reduced admission for children (ages 2 - 9) and seniors. Parking is $5.00. Free admission/parking for Columbus Zoo members.

*Purchase and print your tickets on-line to avoid waiting and save $1.00. Even better, buy a season pass. Walking through Wildlights is a lot warmer (and more fun) than standing (and shivering) in long admission lines.
