In-Town Tourist: Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

Sometimes spinning your wheels can actually get you somewhere.

We caddied bikes to a recent high school cross-country meet with only the vague outline of a plan. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway* looked to be nearby on the map and was un-cycled territory yet to be discovered. Once we located the trailhead near the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway and unloaded our bikes, we were on our way. The low grade paved “rails to trails” way follows the former path of the Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad, connecting Nelsonville and Athens, Ohio. The mostly shaded trail was an easy ride. Winding our way alongside the Hocking River through the Wayne National Forest was a great way to “reset” both mind and body. Rock outcroppings and verdant ravines, the remnants of an old canal basin, a train yard with relics of times past and the Ohio University campus in Athens were among the highlights.
Once in Athens, we did a leisurely loop around the elegant campus, thick with trees and collegiate charm, and refueled with a snack and water break on the banks of the Hocking River before heading back north. At the end of the day we’d put an additional 35 miles on our bikes and some much needed outdoor time into our Saturday.

*”Hockhocking” comes from the Adena Indian word for”twisted” -an accurate description of the Hocking River.

A Cooler Columbus

An In-Town Tourist Feature:
…because Adventure begins in the heart and Travel starts at the end of your own driveway.

Recent high temperatures and heat advisories have ramped up the cool factor of Columbus’ revamped Bicentennial Park, an anchoring destination along the city’s newest parkway, the Scioto Mile.  A mammoth 15,000 square foot fountain complex offers opportunities for the heat-weary to be misted, sprayed and drenched. Amenities include a new restaurant and restroom/changing area.

A feature of the newly opened Scioto Mile, the park is easily accessible via the Olentangy-Scioto Greenway biketrails. We rode down from north Columbus on a recent weekend and wandered the edges of the splash zone.

I had already carried a camera down the previous weekend but still felt an irresistible urge to photograph the refreshing updates, feeling very complimentary of my hometown all dressed up with its new river park frontage.

It was like seeing a good friend debut a chic new look.  Columbus’ “new look” also includes The Promenade, a riverside corridor lined  with swings, chess tables and fountains with framing views of the city skyline. A very becoming style and comfortable vibe.

I was proud of her.

Cycling Three Creeks

An In-Town Tourist Feature:
…because Adventure begins in the heart and Travel starts at the end of your own driveway.

Three Creeks Metro Park Visitor Information and Map

Three Creeks Metro Park is an easy afternoon escape in the warmer months. Less than thirty miles from my home, north of Columbus, it offers thirteen miles of paved trails, fishing ponds and streams, and an assortment of sports fields and playgrounds.

Named for its idyllic setting amidst the confluence of three major streams, Three Creeks includes sections of two Franklin County Greenways trails -an interconnected recreational trail system being built along seven major waterways. I often ride the northern section of Three Creeks’ longest trail. Someday, I’ll be able to leave the truck at home and pedal all the way down. And back… I’m hoping they connect it all before my knees begin to notice the distance!

Riding the Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek Greenway Trails back and forth in the park will give a cyclist an easy 22 miles. Loops such as the ones circling Heron Pond and Sycamore Fields add another couple of miles and some great people-watching moments. There are water crossings, shady wooded sections and wide open expanses of prairie fields that are great for speed and building up a good muscle burn.

Picnicking possibilities are abundant; we often choose a grassy patch by Turtle Pond in the Confluence Trails area. My kids have passed through the playground stage, but there is a great climbing structure nearby.

I’ve arrived in the parking lot with as many as four bikes and as few as one, and it’s always a good ride.
