Deceiving Distances

Up, down and across still extend in all the usual directions, but the distance between their visible limits is a bit deceiving at the Grand Canyon. At some points down is a drop of over a mile (the view back up from the canyon floor is one I aim to hike down to someday soon!). Width of the Canyon at any point ranges between 4 and 18 miles. There is no “stone’s throw” across that one!

Hance Rapid (pictured at right from Desert View) is rated an 8 in difficulty on a 1 to 10 scale. This mile long stretch of river features the Canyon’s greatest single drop. Thirty feet doesn’t sound like much in a place where everything else seems to be measured in miles, but in a kayak?  That could be excessively thrilling!

River of Clouds

The swift mass of cloud took us by surprise as we drove from Marbella to Ronda, Spain along A397. High in the Sierra de las Nievas, the sudden swirl of white prompted us to park at the side of the road and grab cameras.

We weren’t the first to arrive upon the enchanting scene, however. One of my sweetest memories from our trip to Spain is the white-haired couple we spied enjoying breakfast as they luxuriated in their lawn chairs watching the fog roll by.

The flight path of the clouds was obviously anticipated and well known to them. Cheap, yet priceless entertainment. And as the shroud of ivory poured through like a silent river engulfing all the mountains below, they watched as quiet companions, sipping orange juice beneath a Spanish fir.

No, I didn’t climb down, but people do. The New Bridge in Ronda, Spain (completed oh so recently in 1743!) rises 390 feet above the El Tajo gorge floor. The picturesque little village hugs the steep cliff rock. Much as I was inclined to do as I knelt to take this shot!
