On a lake, a river or in the ocean -there's always a landmark or watery path to guide the paddler. While surprise thunderstorms and hail can be problematic (yet another story), to actually lose one's way seems almost impossible. But it can be done...

 <itunes:summary>

After running through the outdoor sauna that is Ohio in August this past week, the cool shores of Tioga Lake are an appealing memory. I love clear ocean waters with devoted loyalty, but for the moments I stood beside Tioga, it was my favorite shade of blue.

Tioga Lake is on the outer eastern edge of Yosemite National Park along Tioga Pass, a winding bit of road that will have you either questioning or praising the driver behind the wheel of your vehicle. A quiet glacial lake fringed with tall straight pines, Tioga is a place to pause with a fishing rod; a spot to lay down the kayak paddle for a moment to simply breathe in remarkable air that carries none of civilization’s scent and harbors the stillness of night at midday…
That’s your heart beating…

Crystal Cove‘s tide pools fill with surprises twice daily as the sea retreats. As the water wanes, citizens of the sea become tenants of the Cove. Some race for crevices, others adhere to rock faces, sidling low to access what moisture remains.

Crabs posture and take positions. A rock louse does a creepy crawl.

The mossy chiton, however, is more measured in its movement. It does not scurry. Lacking eyes and tentacles, its reaction time is slow, sensed through light sensitive organs in its shell. It scrapes algae from rocks with a rasping strap of a tongue and relocates in the dark at high tide.
